How it’s made

Cut & joinedCut on the CNC and table saw, joined with tenons, half-laps or dowels, and fitted by hand.
Finished by handSanded by hand, finished with a hard wax oil, and engraved with our mark.

A note from our studio

“We are all from the same tree.” Tristan said that to me while we were choosing solid maple, white oak and walnut for every piece. We cut, fit and finish each one by hand in our workshop, so no two grains match. Made to order, by hand, and numbered.

Size & details

Woods: solid maple with cherry wedges, or solid white oak with walnut wedges, finished with a brushed-in hard wax oil and a UV-cured oil.

Joinery: a wedged through-tenon (tusk tenon): a wedge passes through the tenon to hold it together.

Sizes: Small 4.5″ wide · Medium 5.5″ · Large 6.5″, each 4.5″ tall and 4″ deep, 8–12 oz. Ships fully assembled.

Care, shipping & returns

Care: dust with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth. Avoid soaking, harsh cleaners and alcohol, which can strip the finish. More in the wood care guide.

Wood is a living material, so grain, color and tone vary from piece to piece. No two are alike.

Shipping: made to order in small batches, then packed and shipped from our studio. The date above shows when yours ships. Every stand is numbered, and we limit it to 3 per person.

The story

A family bookstand, made again.

The Zen Book Stand is a redesign of the bookstand my mom had as a girl in Hong Kong. It holds the books you’re reading now, the ones you want to see every day, instead of the ones stacked away on a shelf.

Each stand is solid wood, held together with a tusk tenon: a wedge passes through the tenon to lock it in place. We cut every wedge by hand, then sand, fit and finish each stand in our studio and engrave it underneath. Every stand is numbered.
